Nació el 16/03/1942. Premio Konex de Platino 2003. Licenciado en Química (1965) y Doctor en Química en la Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales de la UBA. Realizó su Tesis Doctoral bajo la dirección de Luis Federico Leloir en el Instituto de Investigaciones Bioquímicas Fundación Campomar y entrenamientos posdoctorales en el Instituto Pasteur (París) y en la Duke University (EE.UU.). Fue Profesor Titular Regular (Dedicación Exclusiva) en las Universidades de Buenos Aires y de San Martín y fue Investigador Extranjero del Howard Hughes Medical institute. Es Investigador Emérito del CONICET y de la Fundación Instituto Leloir, donde fue jefe del Laboratorio de Glicobiología, además de Director y Presidente del consejo del Instituto. Fue asesor de la Organización Mundial de la Salud. Fue Becario de la John S. Guggenheim Memorial Foundation y es Miembro Extranjero de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias de Brasil y de Uruguay, de la American Academy of Microbiology y de la National Academy of Sciences de EE.UU.. Su especialidad es el estudio del metabolismo de Glicoproteinas en el Retículo Endoplásmico. Miembro de la Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Fisicas y Naturales y de la de Ciencias de Córdoba.
