In June of 1984 four instrumentalists of the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra of the Colon Theatre formed a string quartet. They were Fernando Hasaj, Elias Gurevich, Marcela Magín y Edgardo Zollhofer.

From its debut in November of that same year has performed for the most important concert series of Argentina and South America. The Department of Music of the National Office of Culture and the prestigious Argentine Mozarteum invited them to undergo an extended tour of Argentina. That same year it performed the complete cycle of the quartets Op, 76 by Haydn and the Faculty of Arts of the University of Chile and the Argentine Embassy sponsored its participation in the Musical Week in Frutillar, Chile.

In 1987 they were invited to perform in the Spring Music Festival of Bariloche. That same year they were given the Music Critics Award of “Best Chamber Ensemble of Argentina”.

In 1989 they performed in the city of Montevideo, Uruguay. In 1990 they performed in Santiago, Chile and in Bogotá, Colombia. In 1991 the Music Critics of Buenos Aires again awarded them the prize as “Best Chamber Ensemble of Argentina”. In 1993 the Argentine Embassy in Paraguay invited them to perform a series of concerts in several cities of Paraguay as well as in the Province of Misiones. They won the Konex Award in 1989 and again in 1999.

In 1994 they were invited by the Department of Music of the National Office of Culture to present a series of six concerts under the title: “200 Years of Quartets in Vienna” with works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and Webern including the Lyric Suite of Alban Berg.

In 1995 for the third time they received the prize for “Best Chamber Music Ensemble of Argentina” awarded by the Music Critics of Buenos Aires.

In November of 1997 they recorded their first CD, which featured the Quartet N° 6 by Villa-Lobos and the Quartet N° 8 by D. Shostakovich edited in the frame of “Special Edition Recordings” by Radio Clásica. In 2001 they recorded the CD “Riberas” with the clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera; awarded with the Latin Grammy 2005 for best classical album.

In September of 2002, the Quartet presented the first performance of the Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra by Julian Orbon accompanied by the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, of the Colon Theatre.

The String Quartet of Buenos Aires includes in its repertoire works by Argentinean and Latin American composers such as Juan José Castro, Roberto Caamaño, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Mario Davidovsky, Constantino Gaito, Alberto Ginastera, Paquito D´Rivera, Gabriel Senanes, etc.

Its actual members are Haydée Seibert and Grace Medina (violin), Marcela Magin (viola) and Edgardo Zollhofer (violoncello).
